Seeds In An Envelope

James 5:7-8, David Chittenden

By David Chittenden, Retired pastor of Great Lakes Baptist Church, Flint, MI

Read James 5:7-8.

James writes about practical theology, which is the practical application of biblical teachings. According to James, if we ask God for wisdom, we will receive it. However, our wisdom will only grow if we take action based on what we have learned.

Our wisdom will only grow if we take action based on what we have learned.

A few years ago, my son’s widow gave us a bunch of seeds that she had inherited from her grandmother. This spring, my wife Vicki prepared a spot in our garden, set up some supports for the plants to grow on, planted the seeds, watered them, and waited to see what would happen. To our delight, a beautiful vine covered the entire side of the garage with vibrant purple flowers that were indescribably beautiful. We also had the pleasure of watching hummingbirds and butterflies enjoy the sweet nectar of the purple Hyacinth flowers!

Instead of focusing on the negativity and corruption in the world, James urges us to plant the seeds of wisdom that God has given us. We should be patient and wait for His promised coming, learning, and growing in wisdom as we go along.

Because we allowed the seeds to grow, we have harvested many more seeds than we started with. We have put these seeds in more envelopes for future use and now have a greater ability to share with others while there is still time.

Reflective Questions:

  1. How does James encourage us to cultivate and grow in wisdom through the practical application of biblical teachings? How does the analogy of planting and harvesting seeds relate to our ability to share wisdom and blessings with others?
  2. What are some practical steps we can take to ensure that we are consistently planting and growing in wisdom, even in a world filled with negativity and corruption?
  3. In what ways can we actively wait for God’s promised coming and continue to learn and grow in wisdom during this time?

Memory Verse:

You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. James 5:8

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for Jesus and the wisdom You so freely give. Help me to wait patiently for the fulfillment of Your awesome promises as I allow godly seeds to grow. P.S. Thanks for the bonuses, too.
