Running Springs, CA – Nestled in the serene beauty of the San Bernardino National Forest, ten missionaries gathered at Camp PONDO from November 3-7, 2024, for the Annual Missionary Communication Workshop (MCW). The workshop, organized by Abound Missionary Services, offered intensive training to help missionaries refine their communication skills.
The participants ranged from seasoned veterans with over 45 years of experience to interns just beginning their journey. Abound Missionary Services, founded by Lewis and Karen McClendon, specializes in equipping missionaries with the tools they need to communicate effectively in every aspect of their ministry.
Transformative Training for Missionaries
Each day of the workshop began with classroom instruction, where attendees learned strategies to improve their speaking, writing, and non-verbal communication. Afternoons were dedicated to one-on-one coaching sessions, providing personalized feedback as participants prepared speeches they presented each evening. The speeches were carefully evaluated to help missionaries enhance their presentation skills.
Despite the demanding schedule, attendees described the experience as invaluable.
“It was the most rewarding training I have ever experienced. Before this workshop, I was unsure of myself as a speaker, but MCW left me thrilled to speak and confident in my abilities,” shared one missionary on deputation.
Another participant remarked:
“This workshop gave me an organized process to clearly communicate my message. It helped me feel more confident in my public speaking abilities and pushed me to improve in so many ways.”
Essential for Missionary Success
The MCW is not just for missionaries on deputation. Those on furlough also found the training life-changing.
“This week was one of the most profitable in my ministry,” a furloughing missionary shared. “The hands-on approach by the coaches and mentors was truly amazing. I learned to communicate a lot better.”
Another attendee noted how the skills gained extend beyond the pulpit:
“The valuable communication skills I learned will benefit me in every area. They will enhance my speaking skills, my monthly support letters, and my ability to answer questions clearly.”
Lewis McClendon, co-founder of Abound Missionary Services, emphasized the importance of this workshop for pastors and mission boards:
“To better prepare missionaries for successful ministries, every pastor should make the Missionary Communication Workshop an integral part of their programs.”
Looking Ahead to 2025
