Ames, IA – The Iowa Baptist Bible Fellowship gathered for its recent fellowship meeting at Heartland Baptist Church in Ames, IA, hosted by Pastor Randy Abell, from September 30 to October 1, 2024. The event brought together pastors and staff from across Iowa for a time of fellowship, encouragement, and Biblical teaching.
The meeting began Monday evening with dinner at an upscale Chinese and sushi restaurant, followed by desserts at Pastor Abell’s home. This time allowed pastors and their wives to connect and fellowship before the next day’s events.
Tuesday morning started with a cinnamon roll breakfast at the church, before the morning sessions. Charles Lyons, founder of City Hope International and former pastor of Armitage Baptist Church in Chicago, IL, was the first speaker. Lyons delivered messages emphasizing the need to invest personally in people, encouraging pastors to focus on intentional discipleship as the key to leaving a lasting spiritual legacy.
Following Lyons, Randy Harp, Executive Director of the Baptist Bible Fellowship Central Office, spoke about concerning trends in the American church today. His message addressed issues such as theological drift, the impact of technology on the church, and the changing needs of the modern church. Harp’s insights prompted thoughtful discussions among the pastors.
Attendees enjoyed a fried chicken lunch hosted by the church, which provided further opportunities for fellowship and connection. A brief business meeting was also held, where the success of the recent national Baptist Bible Fellowship International meeting in Rapid City, SD, was celebrated.
Many pastors attending the meeting were bi-vocational, taking time off from their secular jobs to participate. Their unique perspectives and experiences added depth to the discussions throughout the event.Pastor Randy Abell expressed his appreciation for hosting the gathering, stating, “It is always an honor for our church to host the Iowa pastors and their wives. It is great to be together, enjoy a few meals, encourage one another, and be challenged from the Bible together.”
